IESL UOJ YMS Chapter participated to the IESL Young Members Section Meeting at Colombo

Students of Young Members section of IESL from Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna participated in the meeting held in IESL main hall on 30th July 2017. The scheduled dates for TECHNO exhibition competitions from universities such as Drone Competition, Hackathon, CAD-Eager, Spaghetti Bridge and TIC–TAC–TOE were informed in the meeting. Suggestions came with launching a YouTube channel for IESL YMS sections.

Dr. Ramathasan Thevamaran, Postdoctoral Research Associate, Department of Materials Science and Nano-Engineering, Rice University, Houston, TX. Delivered a technical presentation at the Faculty of Engineering. This talk was held at the Faculty of Engineering on 26th July 2017. This was on the cutting-edge technology on Science and Engineering field. Very interesting topic and presentation and many staff members and students participated.

Talk on “how to become unique among hundreds applicants” by Professor Harsha Ratnaweera

Prof. Harsha Ratnaweera, Scientific Coordinator of WaSo Project, delivered a talk on “How to become unique among hundreds applicants”. It was held on 26th July 2017 at Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna. This talk was jointly organized by Civil and Environmental Engineering Society of Faculty of Engineering and Kilinochchi District Center of the IESL Northern Province Chapter. Talk was supported by WaSo project of University of Jaffna. Dr. S. S. Sivakumar, Dr. B. Ketheesan, Prof. S. Kuganathan, Prof. Meena Senthilnanthanan, Mr. D. S. Sampath, Mr. K. Gunaalan, Mr. K. Nirojan, Miss. L. Thakshajini, Mrs. Janaki Anantharajah, Mrs. P. Vipulan participated the talk. Further final and third year engineering students also attended this talk. From this talk, it was excellent to learn how to be attractive when graduates are searching for employment opportunity or applying for postgraduate studies with scholarships.

Professor Harsha Ratnaweera delivered a guest lecture at the Faculty.

Prof. Harsha Ratnaweera, who is the Scientific Coordinator of WaSo Project from Norway, delivered guest lecture at the Faculty of Engineering. The lecture was on “Introduction to water and wastewater treatment” and it was held on 26th July 2017. This was very well attended by the students as targeted. This was one of the most important requirement especially in this region of the country where shortage of water is heavily reported and wastewater treatment is important. This lecture gave excellent knowledge from the senior experience professor with solid background. This lecture was organized by the students’ society with the support of WaSo project. This is to give wider knowledge to support the Civil Engineering Students studies in related subjects taught in semester 4.

Workshop conducted by Eng Srirajan on “Leadership Skills and Demands in Industry”

This workshop is to introduce the leadership skills that is needed for engineers to fulfill the demands in industry and how they can develop their soft skills to become confident leaders in the future. This workshop was conducted at the Faculty of Engineering Seminar room on 24th July 2017. The faculty students and the staff participated to this excellent workshop on leadership skills. This was organized by the Engineering Students Union together with the Faculty carrier guidance cell. Eng. Srirajan’s contacts were strengthen through the faculty team visit to the USA with the support of Care for Education.

Initiation of IT based Industry collaboration with the Department of Computer Engineering

Mr. Canagasaby Ramoshan, Engineer and Social Entrepreneur, CTO of iTEE Foundation in USA, visited to the Faculty with his colleges for initiating IT based industrial collaboration. He initiated this discussion, when the faculty team visited to the USA with the support from Care for Education. Mr. Ramoshan came together with his industrial partners to get connected with the Faculty of Engineering. Mr. C. Ramoshan has been CTO of the iTEE Foundation and an integral part of Yarl IT Hub – an IT incubator in Jaffna for the past 5 years. He is the Director of Engineering, Systems and Applications at Rambus, based in Sunnyvale, CA. He is also the CEO & Co-Founder of Vetri Holdings LLC, which “intends to become the de-facto integrator for the development of IT-based infrastructure in Sri Lanka”.
