The top management team including Dean and Head/Nominee visited to the Houston University USA on 31st May 2017. This was organized by the Care for Education operated at Houston. It was excellent meeting with leading professionals at the University of Houston and observing the undergraduate teaching laboratories as well as postgraduate research sections. Further curriculum, concept of academic program, workload of teachers were discussed in detail. It was very good critical discussions on keeping the active learning environment through many teaching methodologies.

Meeting with John Keels Research and Development team at Colombo

The Dean and University Business Linkage coordinator met Dr. Muditha D. Senarath Yapa, Head of the John Keells Research in an event held on the inventors’ day organized by the American Embassy in Colombo Taj Hotel. It was very well motivated speech given by Dr. Muditha and a follow up meeting was scheduled with the dean, UBL coordinator and all heads of the Departments of the Faculty of Engineering University of Jaffna at his research group in the Technology Incubation Center, Nanotechnology & Science Park in Homagama. Ms. Thilina Weerasekera coordinated the meeting. The meeting was held on 29th May 2017.

Norwegian Students shared their undergraduate project experience

Four Norwegian students, specialized in electrical engineering degree program, have designed and installed solar project with battery storage in Sri Lanka as green energy program for a week ending on 28th May 2017. This program was chosen as their bachelor’s degree project work. This was done at the Rose Villa Heritage Homes project headed by Mr. Yogavarathan Mahalingasivam. Those students also visited to the University of Moratuwa and University of Jaffna during their visit to Sri Lanka.

Meeting with Mathematic Teachers at Mullaitivu District

The Mathematics, Science, Tamil and English subjects were notified as poorly performed subjects among the most important technical education system. As a result few meetings with the teachers and educational administrators were organized by the Faculty of Engineering staff and students in May 2017. It was an excellent opportunity that the former Director of Education of the Mullaitivu District was very much interested on their education system. For this discussion, we had few meetings at the Faculty of Engineering as well as at Mullaitivu Director of Education Office. The problems identified are almost similar to the problems experienced in Kilinochchi but more shortage of teachers as well as infrastructure facilities too. All members discussed the problems, however it has the pressure on addressing all issues with a comprehensive study. Here proper planning, developing correct strategies and implementation to be done through properly designed action plan.

Sri Lanka German Training Institute Kilinochchi top management met with Faculty of Engineering Staff Members

Mr. Erwin Schulz, Director of the Sri Lanka German Training Institute at the Kilinochchi and his staff members visited to the Faculty of Engineering to meet the dean and the staff. The meeting was held on 17th May at the Faculty Board room. It was great pleasure that the both institutes top management staff members met together and discuss about the possible collaborations. The Acting Dean Dr. Anburuvel welcomed the team from SLGTI headed by Mr. Erwin. It was stressed that as these two institutions are very closer to each other in the neighborhood, it can be opened up many possibilities of cooperation for the mutual benefit of both institutions. This meeting has provided a great opportunity to both group of professionals of getting to know each other as well as exploring possible fields of cooperation. There were altogether 7 members visited from SLGTI to and the faculty heads and staff members participated in this discussion. The Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor Atputharajah express his thanking message to Mr. Erwin Schulz and Mrs. Dayanthi from the SLGTI for organizing this meeting, which will bring number of collaborations between both institutions.

Faculty opens testing facilities to the industries

The faculty is grown up with about 15 PhD holders is different disciplines. As a result it has now open possible testing and other services to the industries. For example testing of mechanical properties of earth concrete blocks is possible with the Faculty, where it can serve the best to do the testing in near locations of Northern Province. This has been open up based on the several requests from the industries. For more information on this either Heads of the Departments or Coordinator of the University Business Linkage (UBL) may be contacted. The UBL is in the process of establishing and this unit is going to be dedicated to link the industry and academics together for the best services to the nation.
