ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR POSTGRADUATE PROGRAMS

Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) Program

Master of Philosophy is a research degree. A candidate for a M.Phil. degree may register in either full-time or part-time mode. To meet the residency requirements of the M.Phil. degree, full-time candidates should be registered for a minimum period of two consecutive years, and part-time candidates three consecutive years. While continuous registration is the norm in the M.Phil. program, a candidate may request a leave of absence (LOA) under exceptional circumstances. If the request is approved by the BOSE, FGS and senate, the candidate may suspend the M.Phil. program and resume it at from a later date. LOAs are normally granted for a maximum of one year at a time, and a candidate is allowed a maximum LOA of 3 years. The M.Phil. degree should be completed within five years from the date of initial registration. This period could be extended only under special circumstances with the approval of the Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Graduate Studies.

Candidate shall have one of the following as minimum qualification (Based on the SLQF of UGC) :

  1. An Honors Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 credits in the relevant field of research.
  2. An Honors Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of 30 credits in a related field of research and successful completion of a qualifying examination.
  3. A Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3 in the scale of 0-4 and successful completion of a qualifying examination which will be conducted after completion of 30 credits equivalent to Honors Bachelor’s degree in the same or related field of research.
  4. A qualification of Postgraduate Certificate or above (Postgraduate Diploma, Masters degree -both research and course work acceptable) in the relevant field of research.
  5. Completion of National Vocational Qualification with a minimum GPA of 3 in a scale of 0-4 and successful completion of a qualifying examination which will be conducted after completion of 30 credits equivalent to Honors Bachelor’s degree or Postgraduate Certificate, as determined by the Senate of the University of Jaffna, may also be considered for admission to M.Phil. in that field of specialization.


Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) Program

A candidate for a Ph.D. degree may be registered in either full-time or part-time. To qualify for Ph.D. degree, the candidate should have been registered for a minimum period of three consecutive years, if full-time or four consecutive years part-time. While continuous registration is the norm in the Ph.D. program, a candidate may request a leave of absence (LOA) under exceptional circumstances. If the request is approved by the BOSE, FGS and senate, the candidate may suspend the Ph.D. program and resume it at from a later date. LOAs are normally granted for a maximum of one year at a time, and a candidate is allowed a maximum LOA of 3 years. The Ph.D. degree should be completed within six years from the date of initial registration. This period could be extended only under special circumstances with the approval of the Senate on the recommendation of the Faculty Board of Graduate Studies.

Candidate shall have one of the following as minimum qualification (Based on the SLQF of UGC) :

  1. A Master of Philosophy in the relevant field of research.
  2. A Master’s Degree in the relevant field of research.
    [60 credits after Bachelor’s degree or Honors Bachelor’s degree which include a research component of minimum 15 credits]
    OR
    [Two years Master’s Degree from a recognized University with substantial research component of at least 25% in the subject relevant to the field of research (Amendment approved by the Senate at its 389th meeting held on 20/05/2014) ]

  3. An Honors Bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA of 3 at a scale 0-4, with or without a qualifying examination as determined by the Senate of the University of Jaffna.
  4. An Honors Bachelor’s Degree who has registered to follow M.Phil. degree may be upgraded to Ph.D. level after a minimum period of one year provided that his/her research competencies are of exceptional merit.
  5. A Bachelor’s Degree with a minimum GPA of 3 in the scale of 0-4 and successful completion of a qualifying examination which will be conducted after completion of 30 credits equivalent to Honors Bachelors degree in the same or related field and register to follow M.Phil. degree may be upgraded to Ph.D. level after a minimum period of one year provided that his/her research competencies are of exceptional merit.
