Our first Batch of engineering students

First Batch of the Engineering students registered at the University of Jaffna on 21st January 2014. In addition to the conventional registration process, we facilitated the registration process with computer-based system. This process was made effectively with man-machine interaction using the available IT facilities. While their information was fed onto the computer, they were photographed with a webcam. Both information were collected in our database. Students visited with their parents as it was very supervising event with new faculty and the first batch.

Relocation to Kilinochchi

The Faculty of Engineering moved its operation to Kilinochchi on 16th January 2014. It is another milestone achieved by the crew led by the Dean Dr. A. Atputharajah comprised of Dr. S. S. Sivakumar, Dr. T. Thiruvaran, Dr. A. Anburuvel, Mr. S. Thananjeyan, Mr. S. Arunan and Ms. H. Krishnarajah and the Deputy Registrar Mrs. A. Sivaneswaran. Inception Meeting of the NORAD funded International Collaboration

Inception Meeting of the NORAD funded International Collaboration Project with the Faculty of Engineering on Water Management and Climate Change Adaption, was held from 13th to 15th January 2014 at Kandy, Sri Lanka. This is a Partnership Contract for collaboration under the Norwegian Program for Capacity Development in Higher Education and Research for Development (NORHED) led by the University of Peradeniya. University of Jaffna is a collaborator to carry out the research in water quality. Dr. S. S. Sivakumar, who is the coordinator of the project from University of Jaffna and Dr. A. Atputharajah, acting dean of the faculty, participated in this meeting.

Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah Award for Best Performance – E/13 batch first semester examination

The Professor Eliathamby Ambikairajah award for the best performance is an excellent motivation award for the students to achieve the best in their free education system. For the first batch this award goes to two students, Mr. Ratnakumar Neethan and Mr. Arukattu Patabendige Yasindhu Sandaruwan as their achievement was the highest GPA.

The Award Concept:
The award is to be given every semester, and is awarded to the student who has the best overall academic performance in engineering in that semester. For students in their first three semesters, the award is given to the best overall academic performance in each semester in engineering, irrespective of specialty. Continue reading

Green Envirnment in the Faculty Premises

The students took initiative with the supervision of the staff members to plant trees to make the greener environment in the faculty premises. Kilinochchi branch of the University of Jaffna covers 568 acres of land area. Kilinochchi is predicted to be having hot environment during the middle of the year. It is very important to have large trees to prepare cool environment. Natural cooling was done by planting over 100 trees by the team work of staff and students. This was excellent way of spending some of their spare time. This was done during February-March 2014.

Faculty library facility was enhanced with book donations

The library of the Faculty of Engineering received donations of books, journals, proceedings and memorial lecture notes from few professionals and organizations. The professionals who donated books, journals and proceedings are Professor Maheshan Niranjan from United Kingdom, Dr. Eng. S.S. Sivakumar from Sri Lanka, Engineer S. Niranjan from USA and Engineer S. Sripathmanaban from Sri Lanka. Continue reading

Research Grant to Faculty of Engineering- Statistical Analysis of Electric Power Generation Costs in the Sri Lankan Power System

Miss Anusuya Ananthasingam received the University research grant with the submission of a successful research grant application. This research work is started from September 2014. Today’s era on adding large renewable energy parks, the cost of the generation mix will be changing. This research will add another dimension to the electricity cost analysis, where renewable power plants’ output can be maximized by operating with the coordination of large hydro power plants. Outcome of this research will be very helpful to minimize the electricity cost thus the tariff or electricity bills for consumers while benefiting to the power system operators without losing the reliability of the system.

Three technical officers are working in the Faculty

The University of Jaffna has recruited three technical officers for the Faculty of Engineering. They are working in Departments of Interdisciplinary studies, Electrical and Electronic Engineering and Civil Engineering. The faculty is growing up with separate departmental operations with four fields of specializations. As a result it required more human resources. The three technical staff members, five laboratory attendants have been allocated to the laboratories, under the guidance of the relevant department Senior lecturers as the laboratory in-charges.

Series of discussions to develop curriculum

Series of discussions to develop curriculum for the bachelor degree program of the Faculty of Engineering took place from November 2013 till January 2014. Academia from the University of Peradeniya and University of Moratuwa took part in the discussion and spent their precious time. Drs. D.H.S. Maithripala, G.W.R.M.R. Palamakumbura, A. Atputharajah, T. Sivakumar, Tharmarajah Thiruvaran, Roshan G. Ragel, Swarnalatha Radhakrishnan, A. Anburuvel, S. Aparajithan, and A. Dhanya, and Mr. A. Kaneswaran, Mr. S. Thananjeyan, and Mr. S. Arunan participated in the discussions. In addition, Intellectuals abroad also supported us giving their valuable advises and feedbacks regarding curriculum

Engineering and scientific books donation by IESL – New South Wales (Australia) Chapter

The IESL New South Wales (Australia) Chapter donated engineering books to the University of Jaffna. The books were officially handed over at a brief ceremony held at the university premises in September, 2013, to the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jaffna, Senior Prof. (Ms) Vasanthy Arasaratnam by the President of the IESL, Eng. Tilak De Silva. Eng. Shavindranath Fernando – President Elect of IESL, Eng. Arjuna Manamperi – Chairman, ICT Committee of IESL, Prof. K. Kandasamy – Professor of Physics, Prof. P. Balasuntharampillai – Emeritus Professor of Geography attended the event. The IESL Northern Provincial Centre, represented by its Chairman, Eng. N Suthakaran and Secretary, Eng. T. Barathithasan, facilitated the event and participated in the discussions.
