Northern Province Water Resource Development Colloquium

The Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Services, Animal Husbandry, Irrigation, Water Supply, Food Supply and Distribution, Environment and Co-operative Development – Northern Province has decided to develop a water policy for sustainable management of water resources in the Northern Province of Sri Lanka. As a result, a Water Resource Development Colloquium was organized by the Ministry from 28th to 30th January 2017. This is to obtain novel ideas and concerns of all stakeholders, including professionals and academics. It was focused to create a platform for constructive discussion to initiate drafting a policy document. Dean, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering, Head of the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies and few other staff members attended this conference from the Faculty of Engineering. Dr. (Eng) S.S. Sivakumar, Head Civil Engineering also delivered a presentation titled on “Quality issues to be addressed through water resources policy” during the first session of the event.

Prof. Eliathamby Ambikairajah Award

Jaffna Lagoon Projects (River for Jaffna Project) Discussion

Mr Ijzermans, team leader DR mission, Eng G.V. Ratnasara, MCB consultant, Eng S.P.P. Gamage, MCB consultant, Eng V. Preamkumar, Director Irrigation, Eng N. Suthaharan Deputy Director Irrigation and Sarvananthan Sarvaraja, IE Jaffna, were visited to the faculty of engineering university of Jaffna. This meeting was held at the Department of Civil Engineering on 25th January 2017. During this visit, the delegates had a discussion about the Jaffna Lagoon projects (River for Jaffna Project) with Dr. (Eng.) S.S. Sivakumar, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering.

IESL workshop on Curriculum Mapping and Aligning Assessments

IESL workshop on Curriculum Mapping and Aligning Assessments was held on 16th January 2017 at IESL, Sri Lanka. This is specially done for Civil Engineering, therefore following academic staff of Department of Civil Engineering was participated in this workshop on behalf of faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna: (i) Eng. K.M. Vignarajah, (ii) Dr. N. Sathiparan, (iii) Dr. D.N. Subramaniam, (iv) Dr. B. Ketheesan and (v) Miss. T. Logeswaran. Prof. Julia Lamborn from Australia was the resource person for the workshop and around 50 academics from universities and institutions providing 4 year engineering degree programmes in Sri Lanka participated. President of IESL, Eng. Jayavilal Meegoda welcomed the participants to the workshop.

Tamil-Sinhala Teaching Program

Tamil Sinhala teaching program stared on 10th January 2017 for all the students from E13, E14 and E15 batches. It is also open to any persons from staff or students to learn the Tamil and Sinhala languages. This course contains 100 hours of lectures. The main focus of this course is to learn how to understand and talk with each other persons while learning little bit on writing and reading.

Mr. S. Thananjeyan got full scholarship for his PhD research at University of Melbourne

Mr. S. Thananjeyan received Honours Degree of BScEng with first class from University of Moratuwa in 2009. He has been working for Embla Software Innovation (pvt) ltd for four years since 2009. He served as a senior software engineer since 2012. He is a Certified Scrum Master. He joined the Faculty of Engineering University of Jaffna in 2013. He received Masters in Business Administration in Information Technology (MBA-IT) from University of Moratuwa in 2014. He is currently reading for PhD at the department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of University of Melbourne in Australia since 9th January 2017. He received Melbourne Research Scholarship which is an Elite PhD Scholars’ Program jointly offered by the University Grant Commission of Sri Lanka and Melbourne School of Engineering, University of Melbourne, Australia.

Dr. M.K. Ahilan was recruited to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Dr. M.K. Ahilan joined the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka in January 2017 as a senior lecturer. He was working as visiting researcher at Speech, Audio, Image and Video Technologies (SAIVT) lab, Queensland University of Technology, Australia. He is holding Australian and Sri Lankan Citizenships since 2016.Continue reading

Dr. Ravi Wijesiriwardana was recruited to the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Dr. Ravi is specialized in the multi-disciplinary field of wearable physiological information monitoring systems. He received his PhD from University of Manchester UK from the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences in 2005. His PhD has resulted the first electro mechanics model for the electro conductive fabric structures and Novel Fiber Meshed Transducers for wearable physiological information monitoring systems. His work has produced two international Patents and startup companies as smart life technologies Inc UK and in Textronics Inc USA.Continue reading
