HYDRAULICS AND FLUID LABORATORY

The fluid laboratory of the University of Jaffna's Faculty of Engineering's Department of Civil Engineering. The lab includes a manometer, open flow channel, water hammer apparatus, series and parallel connected pumps, subsonic wind tunnel, and hydrogen bubble flow visualization unit we give students practical chances to enhance their comprehension of fluid dynamics and its applications. Students learn about aerodynamics, hydrodynamics, flow visualization, and hydraulic machinery through hands-on experiments using these instruments. Our lab encourages teamwork in an atmosphere where innovation and creativity flourish, enabling students to create solutions for actual engineering problems.

1.Subsonic Wind Tunnel

Subsonic Wind Tunnel

The Subsonic Wind Tunnel is an essential resource for researching aerodynamic phenomena and examining the properties of airflow surrounding diverse objects. Its main goal is to give students practical experience with fluid mechanics and aerodynamics.

2.Monometers

Monometers

A manometer is used to measure fluid pressure differences. This tool helps students understand how pressure varies in different fluid flow scenarios. It teaches students fluid mechanics, hydrostatics, pressure distribution analysis, and pressure measurement all crucial concepts for fluid dynamics and engineering applications.

3.Series And Parallel Pumps

Series And Parallel Pumps

The setup for Series and Parallel Pumps is intended to show and evaluate the functionality of pumps set up in both parallel and series configurations. Giving students practical insights into pump operation and system design is its main goal.

4.Open Flow channel

Open Flow channel

The Open Flow Channel allows to study water flow in open channels. Students can use it to investigate sediment transport phenomena, measure flow rates, examine hydraulic structures, and explore flow characteristics. This hands-on training is essential to comprehend open channel flow dynamics, which is necessary for civil engineering applications such as stormwater management and river hydraulics.

5.Water Hammer Apparatus

Water Hammer Apparatus

The Water Hammer Apparatus is a tool that helps us understand a phenomenon called water hammer, which happens when there are sudden changes in water flow or quick valve closures in pipes. It's like a shockwave traveling through the pipes, causing pressure spikes that can be harmful. With this apparatus, students can see how these pressure waves move through the pipes and learn about ways to prevent or lessen their impact. This knowledge is crucial for ensuring that our water systems work smoothly and safely, without any unexpected surprises.

6.Hydrogen Bubble Flow Visualization Unit

Hydrogen Bubble Flow Visualization Unit

Understanding fluid flow patterns is made easier with the help of the Hydrogen Bubble Flow Visualization Unit. Students can visually track and examine flow phenomena like turbulence, boundary layers, and vortices by adding hydrogen bubbles to the fluid. With this practical approach, students can understand complex concepts in a tangible way and gain invaluable insights into fluid dynamics.
