Inauguration of the Engineering Week Program

The Engineering Week program was targeted to serve the best while creating excellent team working environment. This was inaugurated on 15th February and the closing ceremony is scheduled on 21st February, which is the birthday of the Faculty of Engineering students’ intake. As it is planned to be the largest event, it has been planned to include all the students and staff together. All the works were separated and given to different teams, where the 100% of the faculty is involving. This also creates excellent social harmony among the students as well as good relationship with the staff members. All the activities are obtained permission with the top administrative officers such as Heads of the Departments, Dean and Vice Chancellor of the University. Further student counselors, senior treasurers of the societies are also informed. Currently the Faculty of Engineering has few societies such as Engineering Student Union, IESL Student Chapter of the University of Jaffna and Civil Engineering Student Society.

1.  Event Details

All the events of this E-Week 2016 were focused to serve the best for the community and schools while developing better relationship between each batch students together with all staff members. With this main objective, all events are planned to enhance students’ soft skills, attitudes, managerial and technical talents. This is the focus of the Government and many leading private organizations too.  As a result the events were categorized as follows.

1.1Sports

With the facilities prevailing in the university compound, some sport activities are planned to be held enhancing the physical and intellectual wellbeing of students and staff. Cricket, Football, Volleyball and Net ball are decided to have as outdoor sports and Badminton, Chess and Carom will be organized as indoor games.

1.2 Talents

In the past, number of functions conducted in small scale to show the students’ talents. It seems that those talents should be polished up their skills in a competitive stage. For that, several competitions are going to be organized such as speeches, singing, dancing and creative writings.Throughout this event, it will be a great opportunity for the students to learn by applying their team work, skills, technologies, talents and attitude towards hard work for the community, which is most important attitude when they graduate.

1.3Innovative

From the start of the faculty, many students showed their innovative ideas and skills through many projects. Even though this is very young faculty, some of those projects won the national awards too. Further engineer supposed to create the world with many innovative and implementable projects. Therefore, it was planned to give chance for others to learn the innovation projects carried out in this Faculty. Further there will be innovative competitions on each specialization disciplines and also best innovative idea will be selected from this.

1.4 Social

It is a must that the Engineers should be able to help the community, where he or she stands. All the Universities are powered by the public money of Sri Lanka.

        One of the important activities is donation of blood, which can save the life of someone in need. A blood donation camp will lead as direct contribution for the whole society.

          During this E-Week, one full day was dedicated for the school students in this region. This is to improve their knowledge as well as to encourage them to plant the seed of engineering dream in their minds. This is plan to empower the large number of students (human resources of the country) to serve the best to the country. There will be several sets of Advance Level experiments, which will be demonstrated to the A/L students by the Engineering students. Some interactive sessions will be organized between staff/engineering students and school teachers to empower them with all possible knowledge. This will serve the community especially this region at large to boost their Advance Level knowledge. It is expected to invite all the students from O/L upward in this region, which is expected of over 4000 students.

        Finally an exhibition will be organized. This is also targeting to the Advance Level students (just to go through) and mainly targeted to the community. Here the idea will be given to start possible small scale business. Further some projects will also be demonstrated. For example, waste to business will be demonstrated with the machinery the faculty received from University of Western Australia. This is mainly for knowledge sharing events at grass roots level with the community. These will also give direct benefit to the community.

1.5 Other Entertainments

There will be several matches with other friendly faculties and universities to develop better relationship between faculties and universities. Also there will be a final show with awarding ceremony, where everyone’s talents and skills turns to their colors and where they will be admired and awarded. This will be last final event of the E-week program.

2.  Schedule of the week program

The E-Week 2016 was planned to start from 15th February to 21stFebruary. All the events are scheduled with minimized interference with the academic program. In academic days, events will start after 4.30 pm. During this week, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday will be taken fully for the planned events.

1.  Budget

Just have a rough estimation of five lacks of rupees and still on the process of preparing detail separate budget on each event. It is planned to have few ways of collecting the money for conducting this E-week events. It is plan to get some University money through approvals and one sponsor from the outside.

As it is the first event, if the full sponsorship is not possible then we will go by few activities such as (i) Book Mark or Sticker selling: By giving number of bookmarks or stickers to each one,where the students can sell them and collect money, (ii) T-Shirts: T-Shirts will be provided to each one according to their team, so that they can be distinguish as well as to use as player’s jersey when representing the team, (iii) small sponsorships: funds from some reputed bodies of the government and as well as from some industries particularly for the awards and other needs of events and (iv) Advertisements and media sponsors: some media institutions have already willing to give their support and it was planned to collect funds from advertisements too.
