Faculty Board and its growth

The faculty board successfully completing its 5th month of it operations by the April 2014. The faculty board is advised by three external members of (i) Professor K. Kandasamy, Senior Professor from the Faculty of Science, University of Jaffna, (ii) Dr. Nihal Somaratne, Senior academic staff member from the Faculty of Engineering, University of Peradeniya and (iii) Eng. D.K.P.U. Gunathilake, Deputy General Manager, Northern Province, Ceylon Electricity Board. The faculty has grown up with four PhD holders and three lecturers. The senior staff members completed their postgraduate studies in United Kingdom, Japan, Australia, India and Sri Lanka.

IESL Student membership

The IESL Northern Province Center conducted a seminar about the professional membership and its services to the Engineering students. As a result of this 36 students submitted application in April 2014 to obtain the IESL student membership. Joining the Sri Lankan Engineering professional organization (IESL) will help the students to update the Engineering activities carried out in the country.

Keep the environment clean

The first batch students of the faculty of engineering initiated a cabbage collection system at the faculty canteen. This is targeted to extend in the future with recycling possibility. It was very good motivational activities by the students while spending their leisure time happily. The students were carrying out number of activities while following the first semester course, which was started from 7th April 2014 onwards.

First Batch Orientation Program

First batch students successfully completed the orientation program on 4th April 2014. This was very interesting 6 weeks program, included 100 hours of learning English, number of technical visits such as to (1) Iranamadu Irrigation Scheme, (2) Road Development Department and working site, (3) Building Department and working site, (4) Palmera board research center, (5) Veterinary and Animal Science Department to see their operations, (6) Katcovalam ICE factory, (7) Chunnaham Diesel Power Plant, (8) Kilinochchi train station signaling office, (9) SLT work station in Jaffna, (10) Agricultural research Centre, (11) District planning office and discussion session with the GA Kilinochchi, (12) Agricultural research Centre at Kilinochchi, (13) Cargills Agrifoods Processing Unit, (14) Factory of the Jaipur Centre for Disability Rehabilitation, (15) Agriculture Engineering Department at Paranthan, (16) MAS Intimates Vidiyal and Vanavil factories and (17) Presentation on safety issues in Road and Building construction activity at CECB office.

Book Donation

Library to the Faculty of Engineering was set up at Kilinochchi in March 2014. It was a long process starting from 1994 onwards, where Professor Navaratnarajah was appointed to establish the Faculty of Engineering. Number of professionals donated books and also some books were purchased through the University allocations. Earlier purchased books were kept at the main library of the University of Jaffna. Finally the Engineering Faculty Library was set up at Kilinochchi in March 2014.

Safety First

Safety first, during the orientation program the first batch of students is getting the hands on training directly from the fire-fabrication team on 17th March 2014. The first batch students visited over 20 industries, around Northern Province, and they were visualized how Engineering is applied in industries. This how they were oriented towards Engineering education while learning the English and other common knowledge required for Engineering studies. Number of Government and Private Industries were helping to properly organize these very valuable pre-study field visits.

Orientation Program

Orientation Program of the first batch students of the Faculty of Engineering was inaugurated on 21st February 2014. The Vice Chancellor Senior Prof VasanthyArasaratnam, Rector Mr. K. Arulvel, Deans of all nine Faculties, Deputy Registrars, Bursar office staff, over 150 visitors including parents of the students and the students were attended. This was the third milestone in the development of the Faculty of Engineering. The event was very successful with the blessing talks from all professors and wishing messages from the students as well as the parents.

Base Stone Placed for the Building Complex

Base stone placed for the building complex of the Faculty of Engineering on 6th February 2014. This was done under the patronage of Higher Education Honorable Minister S.B.Dissanayake. Honorable Minister of Traditional Industries and Small Enterprise Development Douglas Devananda, Deputy Chairman of Committees and Member of Parliament Mr. Murugesu Chandrakumar, Jaffna University Vice Chancellor Senior Professor Vasanthy Arasaratnm and Government Agent Kilinochchi Mrs. Rubawathy Ketheeswaranwere Guests of Honour. There were religious celebrations to mark the event. There were over 150 special invitees including professionals and engineers. About 2500 million Sri Lankan Rupees was approved in the cabinet to put up the faculty building complex, essential equipment and furniture.

Housewarming ceremony at the Faculty of Engineering

Housewarming ceremony was held at the Faculty of Engineering at 8:00 a. m. on 6th February 2014. Honorable Minister S.B. Dissanayake, Honarable Minister Douglas Devananda participated and graced the occasion. Vice Chancellor Senior Prof. (Ms.) Vasanthy Arasaratnam, University council members, Registrar and his staff, Bursar office staff, University senate members and all staff members from the faculty were also present at the occasion. This event was jointly organized with the Faculty of Agriculture.

Our first Batch of engineering students

First Batch of the Engineering students registered at the University of Jaffna on 21st January 2014. In addition to the conventional registration process, we facilitated the registration process with computer-based system. This process was made effectively with man-machine interaction using the available IT facilities. While their information was fed onto the computer, they were photographed with a webcam. Both information were collected in our database. Students visited with their parents as it was very supervising event with new faculty and the first batch.
