Dr. P. Kathirgamanathan and Dr. D. N. Subramanium nominated to the Senate

Dr. P. Kathirgamanathan and Dr. D. N. Subramanium were nominated as Faculty representatives to the Senate on 16th November 2015. This nomination to the Senate will increase the faculty representation at the Senate and thus to contribute to the effective and efficient development of the Faculty of Engineering. Presently, the faculty operates with 7 PhD holders from different disciplines, all of them contribute immensely to the development of the faculty playing various roles.

One hundred trees were planted by the second batch students

Tree planting is one of the annual events of the students from the Faculty of Engineering. This contributes on creating a greener and clean environment to have a cool and pleasant atmosphere, which will avoid us getting trapped into the global warming and droughts. The second batch of the students planted one hundred trees with the help of the staff members. All the trees were donated by the forest department at Kilinochchi and the Faculty thanks for their donation. The tree planting event started on 2nd November and ended on 10th November 2015. This event was coordinated by Mr. S. Arunan and Ms. H. Krishnarajah. The students planted the trees along the west side paths to the Faculty of Engineering.

Third batch was inaugurated on 9th November 2015

Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna has successfully inaugurated the orientation program of the third batch of students on 9th November 2015. There were 49 students registered out of 50 allocated. The inauguration ceremony was attended by Professor K. Kandasamy, who represented the Vice Chancellor of the University and the team of the Faculty staff members. It was noteworthy to mention that the faculty has been operating very successfully for the last two years according to the schedule prepared back in February 2014. According to the calendar, the academic program of the third batch starts on 7th December 2015 and the students are expected to complete their degree by August 2019.

Professor Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy donated books to the Faculty of Engineering

Professor Kalanithy Vairavamoorthy visited to the Faculty of Engineering on 9th November 2015 and donated 229 books to the Faculty library. He also attended the inauguration ceremony of the 3rd batch of students of the faculty held on the same day. The students were delighted about such reputed professionals visiting the faculty and motivating them. Soon after the ceremony, he had brief chat with the staff members regarding the help that he’s willing to offer in the future. He also expressed his keen interest in assisting curriculum development related to water resources and lecturing in relevant area.

Water Harmony Erasmus+ Project (From 10/2015 to 09/2018) – Inaugural Project Meeting in Norway: 5th – 8th November 2015

Aim: The aim of the WaterH is to develop improved learning and teaching tools, methodologies and pedagogical approaches using best practices. As a result, there will be developed skills in multiple use of resources and long-term planning for multiple benefits in such a way that project partners will have harmonised teaching and pedagogical approaches in water related gradual education.

First International Conference paper presented by the Faculty student

A paper with the title of “Conversion of the used heavy fuel oil and lubricant engine oil mixer into lubricating grease” was presented by Mr. S. Sangar (second year student from the faculty) at the Peradeniya University International Research Sessions (IPURSE) 2015 held at the University of Peradeniya, on 5th and 6th November 2015. This project was supervised by Ms. H. Krishnarajah and Dr. K. Velauthamurty, who are the staff from Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Science of the University of Jaffna respectively. This is the first paper presented by the Engineering faculty student at the International conference. The faculty congratulates the student Mr. Sangar and his supervisors for their successful achievement in their useful research especially for the community on minimizing waste and moving towards zero-waste concept.

Senior staff members from other Engineering Faculties visited to the Faculty of Engineering on 4th November 2015. They were Professor K.M. Liyanage, Dr. A.P.N. Somaratna and Dr. K.R.B. Herath from University of Peradeniya, Dr. S.M. Junaideen and Dr. J. Ajith Thamboo from South Eastern University of Sri Lanka and Mr. M. Vignarajah and Dr. Ravi from Kotelawala Defence University (KDU). It was a good tea time discussion with the Faculty staff while going around the faculty to see the site development.

Mr. R. Valluvan attended a workshop on drafting constitution for the University Business Linkage cell

The Sri Lankan Universities are in the process of giving expertise services to promoteMicro, Small, and Medium Scale Enterprises (MSME). The University of Jaffna also took this initiative directed by the UGC very positively. For this the Faculty of Engineering, even though it is with a very small team, took action in par with other Faculties. It has been notified that the existing MSMEs need help from professionals to boost their businesses. Currently they are mostly with the traditional mode of operation. Therefore the Jaffna University has come forward to use its resources and expertise to locate, and identify complications in the MSMEs within their region and provide solutions for them. By this it is intended to strengthen ties between the University and the Mercantile Enterprises with a common goal of improving the regional Economy.

Dr. P. Balakumar visited the Faculty

Dr. Ponnampalam Balakumar visited Engineering faculty on 26th October 2015. He is presently working as a research scientist at the NASA Langley Laboratory. Prior to joining NASA, he was a professor at the Old Dominion University, VA. He received his BSc.Eng. (Civil) from University of Peradeniya, M.S. (Mechanical) from University of Missouri and Ph.D. (Aeronautics & Astronautics) from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
