Training Workshop on “METHODS IN WATER QUALITY TESTING”

Mr. D.S. Sampath (Lecturer from Engineering), Mr. N. Thasaradan (Lecturer from Science) attended training workshop on “METHODS IN WATER QUALITY TESTING” on 15th and 16th of December 2016. This was held at Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya. Workshop was jointly organized by Geological Society of Sri Lanka (GSSL) and Department of Geology, University of Peradeniya. WaSo Asia project of University of Jaffna sponsored above two participants from the University of Jaffna. Prof. C.B. Dissanayake, Prof. Rohana Chandrajith, Prof. Rohan Weerasooriya, Dr. Achala Herath and Mr. Saranga Diyabalanage were the resource persons of this workshop.

WaSo – Asia Annual Planning Meeting

WaSo Asia planning meeting was held during 13th – 15th December 2016 at Department of Civil Engineering, University of Jaffna. Prof. Harsha Rathnaweera, Prof. Tore Saetersdal, Dr. Berit Hauger Lindstad, Dr. Olfa Khelifi EP Arfaoui, and Mr. Rune Romes represent the Norwegian partners. Prof. MD Mafizur Rahman and Miss Fahmida Akhter attended from Bangladesh and Dr. Heng Sokchhay and Dr. Doung Ratha represent the Cambodia. Prof. Weerakoon and five others attended from University of Peradeniya. Dr. A. Atputharajah, Dean/Engineering also attended the meeting. Dr. S.S. Sivakumar, Coordinator, WaSo Asia project of University of Jaffna, Eng. Saliya Sampath and Miss Janaki Kanagarajah, project assistants WaSo Asia project of University of Jaffna organized the meeting. Eng. Saliya Sampath was the Coordinator of WaSo Asia planning Meeting. Participants went to Habarana for village safari on 15th Dec 2016 after the meeting. Then they proceed to Kandy to attend rest of the meeting with African partners and to participate ICSBE international conference.

Big Data Workshop

“Big data” big data workshop jointly organized by the Department of Computer Engineering of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna in collaboration with the Virtusa POLARIS. It was held on 10th December 2016 at Faculty of Engineering. Four topics regarding the big data such as processing big data, data mining, churning of big data and social media and big data were covered. The following are the resource persons.

Movie night organized by the Faculty students

The faculty students (Engineering Students Union) organized the movie night event on 7th December 2016 night. All the students and some staff were participated by watching the movie. With the possible facility, the students creating entertainment events. This was done at the Engineering Drawing room with multimedia projector facility. The faculty new administrative building, which is very closer to the completion stage, will have enough auditorium facility for students’ entertainment events.

75 students of E16 batch of Faculty of Engineering, university of Jaffna visited to the main premises on 6th December 2016. They have visited many places including all four faculties of Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, Faculty of Management, Faculty of Medicine and other units such as Main library, health center, university playground, Ramanathan Academy of Fine Arts, Siddha Medicine Unit etc.

Water Harmony Erasmus+ 5th Project Meeting, Qinodao Technological University, China

The WaterH 5th Project meeting was held in China from 30/11/2016 to 04/12/2016 at Qinodao Technological University. This meeting was organized as per the Partnership agrееmеnt on Harmonizing water related graduate education (Water Harmony) with Еrasmus+. This supports projесt сooреration bеtwееn 10 universities in Norway, Germany, Poland, Ukraine, China and Sri Lanka.

Meeting with Mr. Wolfgang Hruschka on SME-academia cooperation and commercially viable projects from the Faculty of Engineering which would benefit SMEs

GIZ organized a meeting with the top level delegates from Germany to boost the Small and Medium Entrepreneurs (SME) in the Country. As a result, it was focused to have the meeting in Northern Province. A meeting was arranged at the Kilinochchi premises (covering both Faculty of Engineering and Agriculture) on 30th November 2015. Mr. Wolfgang Hruschka from Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development in Germany with his delegates attended this event.

E16 fresh students visited Iranamadu Irrigation Development Project

75 students of E16 batch of university of Jaffna visited Iranamadu reservoir and irrigation systems in Northern Province on 30th Nov 2016. They have visited Iranamadu reservoir, LB and RB canals, irrigation structures and their canal network. Students got golden opportunity to visit ongoing constructions of Iranamadu spillway, dam and bridge. Eng. N. Suthakaran, Deputy Director of Irrigation – Kilinochchi Range and Project Director – Iranamadu Irrigation Development Project (IIDP) delivered a presentation to the fresh students. He guided students on explain how and where engineering is applied in industry while taking them through the field visit. Every batch is visiting Iranamadu during their orientation programme and N. Suthakaran is always helping the faculty.

Faculty staff attended the “CodeCraft 2017” Competition launching ceremony:

Dr. A. Kaneswaran, Head of the Department of Computer Engineering and Prof. A. Atputharajah attended the “CodeCraft” competition launching ceremony on 25th November 2016 at Hall Ruby, Hilton Colombo. Codecraft completion opening ceremony was graced by Hon. Minister of Telecommunications and Digital Infrastructure Harin Fernando. CodeCraft is a nationwide competition for students, professionals, colleges, and corporates. This competition has been endorsed by the Ministry of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure, Ministry of Higher Education and Highways, University Grants Commission, ICT Agency of Sri Lanka and the IT-BPM and Knowledge Services Industry Chamber (SLASSCOM).
