Mr. Mahalingasivam Yogavarathan from Norway delivered a talk on Engineers without Boarders

An introductory guest lecture by Mr. Mahalingasivam Yogavarathan from Norway on the activities of Engineers without borders and the opportunities they provide for Engineers to serve the community. This lecture was held on 3rd March 2016 at 4:15 pm in the Lecture Hall No 2, 2nd Floor, Faculty of Engineering, Ariviyal Nagar. Mr. Yogavarathan is a Senior Principal Lead with Aker Solutions AS-MMO. He has 24 years of experience on most aspects of the Oil Industry from upstream to fabrication of topside and maintenance downstream. Further he got multi-discipline experiences from R&D engineering, fabrication, installation, training, technical support and management. He is also a member of humanitarian agencies such as Engineers without boarders and Norway Cares

Meeting with delegates from Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Gandhinagar, Gujarat

Dr. K. Chelvakumar presently serving as a visiting professor in IIT, Gandhinagar (IITGN) informed the Faculty of Engineering that there are possible collaborations with IIT (Gandhinagar). As to initiate the relationship and to explore the possible collaborations, during the visit of Prof. Amit Prashant, Dean of Academic Affairs, IITGN, We, Faculty of Engineering academics had a meeting with IITGN delegates on 26th February 2016 at Jungle Beach Resort, Trincomalee.

Third year Civil Engineering students visited Deduru Oya, Victoria, Randenigala and Rantambe irrigation systems

Third year civil engineering students of university of Jaffna visited Deduru Oya, Victoria, Randenigala, Rantambe and Minipe Scheme under “CE 5040 – Hydraulic Engineering and design” subject on 25th and 26th February 2016. They visited Deduru Oya reservoir headworks and canal system on 25th morning. They visited aqueduct and syphon on RB canal of Deduru Oya, Ridi Bendi Ella weir and some other canal structures.

Engineering week was organized during 3rd week of February

The E-week organized by the students of the faculty of Engineering was held from 15th February to 21st of February in the faculty premises as planned. It was the first largest ever student event organized by the students of the faculty under the supervision of the faculty staff. All students of the faculty, academic and non-academic staff, the school students of the region and the neighboring Agriculture Faculty students took part in various events organized during the week. A talk on “Borehole water quality in Jaffna and feasible low cost treatment processes for borehole water contaminated with oil, grease, lead, chromium, cadmium and nitrate” was delivered by Eur Ing V. Yogendran on 20th February 2016 from 3 pm till 6pm at the Euroville Conference Hall.

Mr. S. Arunan received full scholarship for his PhD

Mr. S. Arunan received full scholarship to pursue his postgraduate studies at the University of New South Wales, Australia. He served as a Lecturer (Probationary) at the Department of Computer Engineering from 2013 till 19th February 2016. He left the department to continue his PhD studies in Australia. He is a dedicated staff member and readily volunteers for tasks beyond the scope of his normal work duties. The faculty wishes him for the best success in his PhD research and to serve the best on his return to the country while contributing to the research internationally. 

 

Team visited to check the progress on the Australian-Sri Lankan University Partnerships to develop community based waste recycling business

Dr. Randika Jayasinghe and Dr. V. Cynthujah, project coordinators from the Universities of Western Australia and Jaffna organize this team visit from 14th to 16thFebruary 2016 at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna. In this team, the project leader Prof. Caroline and other members from the University of Queensland, University of Western Australia and University of Perth visited to the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna.
