Donation from SEA to the Faculty of Engineering on 19th December 2014
A solar measuring station with online data transfer facility was installed at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna (UoJ) and operated by Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SEA) from March 2013. It was handed over to the Faculty of Engineering, UoJ on 19th December 2014 by Dr. Thushitha Sugathapala, Director General, SEA to the Acting Dean of the Faculty of Engineering during a seminar session on sustainable energy development in Northern Province. It is one of the two calibrated solar measuring stations funded by ADB in Sri Lanka.
Seminar on strategic approach for sustainable energy development in Northern Province
A program targeting the concept of energy saving and promoting alternative energy technologies to achieve green electricity consumption was launched by the Sri Lanka Sustainable Energy Authority (SLSEA). An interactive full day program was conducted on 19th December 2014 at the Auditorium of Kilinochchi newly built District Secretariat Office, targeting the potential officers from the Government and other organizations. Dr. Kumar is JSPS Postdoctoral Fellow from the Institute for the Advanced Study of Sustainability, United Nations University (UNU-IAS) in Tokyo, Japan. He has arrived Sri Lanka to attend the conference on Sri Lanka-Japan collaborative research 2014 held at Kandy, Sri Lanka. He visited Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna during 16th – 19th December 2014. He has delivered a guest lecture for first year undergraduates on 17th December 2014.

Mr. D. S. Sampath attended pre conference workshop on International River Interface Cooperative- Water System Modeling on10th and 11th December 2014 at the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. He presented his research paper at the 5th International Conference on Sustainable Built Environment (ICSBE 2014) during 12th – 15th December 2014 at Earl’s Regency Hotel, Kandy, Sri Lanka.Objective of the conference was Capacity Development for sustainability.
Students visit to the wind farm at Palai
Second batch students visited the Wind Farm in Palai, Jaffna, Sri Lanka on 15th December 2014 during their orientation program. A 10MW wind power plant is under construction by Beta Power (Pvt) Ltd while another 10MW wind power plant by Joule Power (Pvt) Ltd. Continue reading
Students visit to MAS Intimates Vidiyal
Second batch students visited the MAS INTIMATES – Vidiyal, Kilinochchi, Sri Lanka on 11th December 2014 during their orientation programme. It was excellent experience to the students while watching the time line operational process in the apparel industry such as MAS INTIMATES. It was also important to note, how engineering is applied in garment industries especially on man-machine interactions. This visit gave an overall idea about a garment factory and also understood the important of team work in an industrial environment.
Students visited to Katcovalam ice factory
During the orientation program of the second batch of the Engineering Faculty, students visited the Katcovalam ice factory, an industrial visit as a part of the orientation program. Complete process of the ice factory was explained very well. Students were very keen to understand the ice factory processes. They questioned about the entrepreneurship and the challenges behind it.
Students visited to Iranamadu Irrigation Development Project
The second batch of students visited the Iranamadu Irrigation Development Project (IIDP) site and its office on 2nd December 2014 afternoon. The IIDPis one of the major projects where the Engineering is applied for the direct benefit of the community. Deputy Director Eng. N. Suthaharan,together with his team of Engineers, explained the project concept, challenges and how engineering is applied together with other common knowledge.
Mr. D. S. Sampath joined the Department of Civil Engineering
Mr. Saliya Sampath joined the Department of Civil Engineering in the capacity of Lecturer (Probationary) from 1st December 2014. He earned BScEng Degree from University of Peradeniya in 2012. He served as an irrigation Engineer attached to the Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) for a period of 5 months. Later he joined the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya as a Research Assistant for a period of 2 years. He is affiliated to the Department of Civil Engineering, University of Jaffna and reading for his Master of Philosophy degree at Department of Civil Engineering, University of Peradeniya, at present.
