Dr. S. Sivasegaram, who served as Senior Professor at the University of Peradeniya, is now doing visiting lectures in the Faculty. He is teaching Thermodynamics to the students from 12th September 2014. He graduated from the University of Ceylon with BScEng with First Class honours in 1964, completed his Diploma at Imperial College and obtained his MSc with Distinction from the University of London in 1967. All staff members of the Faculty had a discussion with IESL Accreditation consultant on 18th of August at the IESL head office in Colombo. Good interactive discussions were conducted with the consultant Prof. Noel Fernando. It was very good to know the IESL accreditation requirements, which according to the Washington Accord. Seminar on “Hypotheses of cultivating fresh water in the Jaffna Lagoons, is a challenge for Engineers and Environmentalists”.
This awareness research presentation was jointly organized by the Department of Civil Engineering Faculty of Engineering of the University of Jaffna, Institute of Engineers of Northern Provincial Centre, Jaffna Managers Forum and Jaffna Science Association Section B. It was held at the Faculty of Engineering on 11th August 2014. This presentation was based the research carried out by Eng. S. Kuganesan from Norway under Dr. S.S. Sivakumar’s supervision. This event was very successful with the participation of 94 participants including Secretary, former GA, Senior Academics, Directors and Engineers.
First Batch Completed their First Semester
The first batch of engineering students has successfully completed the first semester of their education on 9th August 2014. This was a challenging semester conducted while adding number of facilities to the Faculty. However, this has added excellent experience with challenges, motivation and enthusiasm to the student. Tea-time with Teachers
On 9th August 2014, at the end of the semester 1, staff crew of the Faculty of Engineering engaged in a discussion with students to get their feedback about the completed semester. The discussion was arranged by the student counsellor of the Faculty.The discussion started with a tea party followed by some entertainment activities by both staff and students. Finally, a group of physicians comprised of a consultant and a medical doctor from Kilinochchi hospital lead by the Medical Superintend Dr. P. Karthikeyan, conducted a talk on “How to face challenges”.

Discussion with Professor Maheshan Niranjan
Professor Maheshan Niranjan came to the Faculty and stayed on 31st July and 1st August 2014. He conducted a workshop on computing at the Faculty of Engineering. Prof Maheshan Niranjan was the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering when he was at Sheffield University. He graduated from the University of Peradeniya and completed his PhD at the University of Cambridge. Continue reading
First girls-hostel for the Kilinochchi Premises of the University of Jaffna
Rehabilitation of the existing hostel building, in the Kilinochchi premises, has been completed. All the first year girls of the Faculties of Engineering and Agriculture got the accommodation within the University premises from July 2014. Currently the boys are continuously staying in large houses closer to the faculty, which were hired by the University of Jaffna. Further free transport facility is given to the students to travel between accommodation and the Faculty. The hostel facilities provide tremendous support to the students to perform the best in their studies.
Train station to Ariviyal Nagar
Base stone was laid for Ariviyal Nagar Train Station on 28th July 2014 by the Member of Parliament Mr. M. Chandrakumar, Government Agent Mrs. Rubawathi Ketheeswaran, Chief Engineer Eng. Premkumar from Sri Lanka Railways, Deans of the Faculties of Engineering & Agriculture, Deputy Registrar Kilinochchi, Divisional Secretary, Deputy Director of Irrigation, Chief Engineer from the RDD, Design Engineer from CECB and Managers from the industries of MAS Intimates Vidiyal, MAS Active Vaanavil and Cargills Kist Food Processing Center. Discussion with Professor N. Ravichandran
Professor N. Ravichandran was visiting the Faculty for two weeks till 18th July 2014. He was mainly discussing the curriculum of the Department of Civil Engineering. Ravi graduated from the University of Peradeniya in 1997, where he was the batch-top for three years and obtained number of awards. Currently he is working as an Associate Professor of Civil Engineering at Clemson University in the USA. Continue reading
