Second Surveying Camp of the Engineering students

Surveying Camp is part of the curriculum of the “CE 4010: Surveying and Fieldwork” subject. From the second batch, 29 Civil Engineering Students attended the surveying camp and it was 7 days of residential program, which was held from 7th November to 13th November 2016 at the premises of the University of Peradeniya. Twenty five bicycles were donated by TEF as remembrance of late Prof. A. Thurairajah

Tamil Engineers Foundation (TEF) have donated 25 bicycles (with the cost of 360,060 rupees) to the students of the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna. This was done on 10th November 2016 as remembrance of Late Professor A. Thurairajah and with the invited motivational talk to the students by Professor S.B.S. Abayakoon. The same donation took place in 2015 and the bicycles are used effectively by the students.

Prof. A. Thurairajah Memorial Lecture 2016: “Ethics for University Teachers”

Prof. A. Thurairajah Memorial Lecture 2016 was delivered on the title of “Ethics for University Teachers”. This lecture was conducted by Professor S.B.S. Abayakoon on 10th November 2016 at the Kailasapathy Auditorium of the University of Jaffna. The lecture was excellent and very well attended by the University lecturers, researchers, Directors and Managers from several organizations and many Engineers. This was organized by the Faculty of Engineering. The lecture very well delivered the message on ethics by taking Prof Thurairajah’s life style. Continue reading

Workshop on “Waste for Life project” for empowering the community

The “Waste for Life” workshop was hosted by the Faculty of Engineering, University of Jaffna, Kilinochchi on 24th October 2016. This is another service from the Australian-Sri Lankan University partnerships project on developing community-based waste recycling businesses. This workshop offers a unique opportunity for local business to experience first-hand on what the “Waste for Life Program” is about and how it can potentially offer economic opportunities to local communities. Inauguration of the 60kW solar pilot power plant

The 60kW roof top pilot solar power plant at the Faculty of Engineering was operated with grid connection net-metered operation from 14th October 2016. It consists of 55kW string converter configuration with three sets of converters and 5kW of micro converters configuration concept. Each panel is 250Watts and total of 240 panels were placed at the roof top of the first building of the Faculty of Engineering. Continue reading

Students participated in inter university concrete mix design competition

Siam City Cement (Lanka) organized an inter university concrete mix design among all engineering faculties in Sri Lanka. Fifteen students took part in the competition: (i) Balasubramaniam Nilakshan, (ii) Abdul Jabbar Imran Khan, (iii) Ratnakumar Neethan, (iv) Tharshikka Vickneswaran, (v) Sivalingam Sivasankaranarayana, (vi) Kulathasan Thanushan, (vii) Dimuth Bopitiya, (viii) Jeyachandramoorthy Luxsan, (ix) Don Ashan Madushka Jeerasingha, (x) Manogaran Jegathees, (xi) Youganathan Yogananth, (xii) Sebamalai Sujithran, (xiii) Maarimuththu Mathivathanan, (xiv) Kirupairajah Thanushan and (xv) Asokarasa Janarth. Mr. Thurairaja Kankeyan obtained full scholarship for his MPhil studies at Moratuwa

Mr. T. Kankeyan, who is attached to the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies as lecturer (probationary) in Mechanical Engineering, got the two years full scholarship for his MPhil research studies. He got study leave from the Department of Interdisciplinary Studies from 3rdofOctober 2016. He is reading for his MPhil studies at Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Faculty of Engineering, University of Moratuwa in Sri Lanka. Continue reading

Dr. B. Ketheesan joined the Department of Civil Engineering

Dr. Ketheesan joined the Department of Civil Engineering as Senior Lecturer from 3rd October 2016. He obtained his B.Sc (Eng) degree from the University of Peradeniya in Year 2007. Then, he received his Master’s degree (Environmental Engineering) and PhD (Civil engineering) from New Mexico state university, United States in Year 2009 and 2012, respectively. He worked as a Research fellow at Nanyang Environment and Water research institute (NEWRI), Nanyang Technological University, Singapore from Jan 2013 to September 2016. He has over eight years of research experience in the field of environmental/water engineering with particular emphasis on waste/biomass to bioenergy technologies, integrated anaerobic digestion and membrane technology, microalgae to bio-diesel production and mathematical modeling of environmental bio processes.

Students won the first runner up in the national level robot competition

Uva Wellassa University of Sri Lanka conducted its first robotic competition with the name of UWU ROBOT BATTLES 2016. The Robotic competition was conducted in two categories as SCHOOL CHALLENGE and OPEN CHALLENGE under two different tasks in robotics and it was island wide. Undergraduate students’ teams and any other institutions or school or industries’ teams were able to participate in the open challenge. It was to test the advanced skills of participants that were required to complete a higher task, in a challenging environment, in different ways.
